We put a lot of thought into taking care of the skin on our face and body, but our lips sometimes get whatever is left over.

A quick swipe of lip balm. Maybe another swipe five minutes later. Then another because the first two have somehow disappeared into the universe.

But when your lips are feeling dry, rough, or flaky, sometimes lip balm alone isn’t quite the whole answer.

That’s where lip scrub and lip balm come in.

They do two different jobs, and together they make one very cute little lip-care routine.

First things first: what does a lip scrub do?

A lip scrub helps gently buff away dry, flaky skin from the surface of your lips.

Think of it as a tiny reset button.

When dry skin builds up, your lips can feel rough even after you apply lip balm. A gentle scrub helps smooth the surface so your lips feel softer and your lip balm can go onto freshly exfoliated skin.

My lip scrubs are made with fine sugar for gentle exfoliation, along with nourishing oils and ingredients that help make the whole experience feel less like aggressively sanding your face and more like an actual self-care moment. 😂

Lip scrub is especially helpful when your lips feel:

  • Dry or flaky

  • Rough or uneven

  • In need of a little extra smoothing

  • Less-than-thrilled about lipstick going on top of them

You don’t need to scrub hard. Your lips are delicate, and gentle is the goal.

How do you use a lip scrub?

Scoop out a small amount and gently massage it over your lips using small circular motions.

Then wipe or rinse away the excess.

That’s it.

The key word here is gently. More pressure does not mean more effective—it just means your lips might get irritated, which is very much the opposite of what we’re trying to accomplish.

I’d use a lip scrub once or twice a week, or whenever your lips are feeling especially flaky. It isn’t something you need to do constantly.

And then comes the most important part...

Follow with lip balm

Freshly scrubbed lips and lip balm belong together.

After exfoliating, smooth on your favorite lip balm to help keep your lips feeling soft and conditioned.

While lip scrub helps remove the rough, flaky stuff sitting on the surface, lip balm is the cozy follow-up.

My lip balms are made with a rich blend of ingredients designed to glide over the lips and leave them feeling soft and moisturized.

So the easiest way to remember it is:

Lip Scrub = Smooth
Lip Balm = Soften & Moisturize

One prepares the lips. The other finishes the job.

But do I need to scrub my lips every time I use lip balm?

Absolutely not.

Please do not scrub your lips 14 times a day. 😂

Lip balm can be used whenever your lips need it—morning, night, after eating, before heading outside, or whenever you find yourself reaching for it.

Lip scrub is the occasional extra step.

Think of lip balm as your everyday routine and lip scrub as your little maintenance day.

The perfect little nighttime routine

One of my favorite ways to pair the two is before bed.

First, gently exfoliate with lip scrub.

Wipe away the excess.

Then apply a comfortable layer of lip balm and let it do its thing while you sleep.

It takes about a minute, but it feels like you made a whole responsible self-care decision.

Look at you go. 😂

What about before lipstick or lip gloss?

Yes!

If your lips are flaky, lip color can cling to dry patches and look uneven. Gently exfoliating beforehand can help create a smoother surface.

Just don’t go wild with the scrub immediately before applying a matte lip product. Be gentle, follow with balm, and give your lips a little time if they’re sensitive.

Soft lips first. Cute lip color second.

Can you over-exfoliate your lips?

Definitely.

Your lips are delicate, so scrubbing too often or too aggressively can leave them feeling irritated instead of smooth.

A little goes a long way.

For most people, once or twice a week is plenty. If your lips feel sore, cracked, or irritated, skip the scrub and give them a break.

Lip care should feel good. If it doesn’t, your lips are allowed to file a complaint.

The easiest lip-care routine ever

You do not need a 12-step routine.

You need two tiny things:

Step 1: Gently scrub away flaky skin when needed.
Step 2: Follow with lip balm.

That’s it.

Smooth. Balm. Done.

Keep a lip balm in your purse, by your bed, at your desk, in the bathroom...

Actually, if you’re anything like me, just accept that lip balm will eventually live in every room of your house. 😂

The final verdict

Lip scrub and lip balm aren’t interchangeable.

A lip scrub helps smooth away dry, flaky skin.

A lip balm helps keep your lips feeling soft and moisturized.

You can absolutely use lip balm on its own every day—but when your lips need a little extra attention, the two together make the perfect pair.

A little scrub.

A little balm.

And one more tiny excuse to make everyday self-care feel fun. 💕

Stay soft, stay cozy, and I’ll see you in the next Beauty Blizzard. ❄️
