Body Butter vs. Lotion: What’s the Difference?

They both moisturize your skin—but they definitely aren’t the same thing.

If you’ve ever looked at a jar of body butter and a bottle of lotion and thought, Okay... but which one am I actually supposed to use? You’re not alone.

Both are made to help keep your skin feeling soft and moisturized, but they have very different textures, formulas, and personalities. And yes, I fully believe skincare products can have personalities.

So, let’s settle it: body butter vs. lotion.

What is body butter?

Body butter is the rich, indulgent one.

Unlike lotion, traditional body butter is made without water. Instead, it’s created with a blend of nourishing butters and oils. My whipped body butters are made with ingredients like shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E.

Because there’s no water in the formula, body butter is concentrated. You don’t need much—a little goes a surprisingly long way.

The texture is thick, rich, and designed to melt as it meets the warmth of your skin.

Body butter is especially lovely for:

  • Dry skin

  • Rough elbows, knees, and heels

  • After-shower moisturizing

  • Colder or drier weather

  • Anyone who loves a rich, luxurious skincare moment

One of my favorite ways to use it is right after a shower, while the skin is still slightly damp. The butter melts in beautifully and helps leave skin feeling soft and conditioned.

So, what is lotion?

Lotion is the lighter, everyday one.

Unlike body butter, lotion contains water. Water and oils normally don’t want to stay mixed together—rude—so an emulsifier helps bring them together into the smooth, creamy lotion texture we know and love.

Because of its water-based formula, lotion feels lighter and spreads easily across the skin. It absorbs more quickly than body butter, making it perfect when you want moisture without the heavier, richer feel.

Lotion is especially great for:

  • Everyday, all-over moisturizing

  • Warmer weather

  • Quick application

  • People who prefer a lighter feel

  • Hands and body throughout the day

It’s the product you can pump into your hand, smooth on, and get on with your day.

The biggest difference? Water.

This is the easiest way to remember it:

Lotion contains water. Body butter doesn’t.

That one difference changes almost everything about how the products feel and behave.

Lotion is lighter and faster-absorbing because it’s an emulsion of water and oils. Body butter is richer and more concentrated because it’s made primarily from butters and oils.

Think of it like this:

Lotion = lightweight everyday moisture
Body butter = rich, concentrated moisture

Neither one is automatically “better.” They just do different jobs.

Which one should you choose?

This is where I give you the wonderfully unhelpful answer:

It depends. 😂

Choose body butter if your skin tends to feel very dry, you love rich textures, or you want something especially luxurious after a shower.

Choose lotion if you want something lighter, faster, and easy to use every day.

And if you’re like me?

Keep both.

Use lotion when you need quick, easy moisture. Reach for body butter when your skin needs something richer—or when you just want to turn getting out of the shower into a whole little self-care event.

Can you use both?

Absolutely.

You don’t have to choose a side in the Great Body Butter vs. Lotion Debate.

You might use lotion during the day and body butter at night. Lotion in the summer and body butter in the winter. Lotion all over and body butter on extra-dry areas.

Your skin doesn’t follow a rulebook, and your routine doesn’t have to either.

Wait... what about Golfer’s Balm?

And now we have a third player entering the chat. 👀

A balm is even more targeted than body butter.

Our new Golfer’s Balm was created for rough, dry, hardworking hands and stubborn dry spots. It has a firmer, more protective feel thanks to its blend of beeswax, shea butter, and nourishing oils.

Despite the name, you absolutely do not need to golf.

It’s for golfers, gardeners, mechanics, makers, crafters, DIYers, and anyone whose hands regularly go through it.

So the easiest way to think about the whole lineup is:

Lotion: lightweight, everyday, all-over moisture
Body Butter: rich, concentrated moisture for dry skin
Golfer’s Balm: targeted care for rough, hardworking spots

The final verdict

There isn’t a winner.

Lotion and body butter aren’t competing products—they’re different tools for different moods, seasons, and skin needs.

Some days call for a quick pump of lotion.

Some days call for a scoop of fluffy body butter.

And some days your hands have been through enough and need the balm. 😂

Whatever kind of day it is, there’s room for a little extra care.

Stay soft, stay cozy, and I’ll see you in the next Beauty Blizzard. ❄️
